Devoted Spirits preview The Answer with funk-rock single

“This Generation” popular at iTunes and attracting radio’s attention

While Devoted Spirits are in the lab working on the next generation of music from the rock/R&B/funk band, the first single, “This Generation,” is now available on iTunes.  The original song, penned by the band’s Sheldon Reynolds along with Earth, Wind & Fire’s Ralph Johnson, has swiftly attracted the attention of online and terrestrial radio stations at home and abroad.  The track, which will appear on the band’s second album, The Answer, will be released in January in Japan by B-Emotion with plans for a U.S. release on the Immerse Yourself label in the works.

Produced by Reynolds, “This Generation” features an anthem-like arena rock chorus, jazzy scat vocals, a funky groove and inspirational lyrics calling for social responsibility.  Reynolds deployed fiery guitar riffs, keyboardist Larry Dunn laid down a smokin’ solo and Rhonda Smith (from Prince’s band) thumped the bass.

Devoted Spirits is Reynolds (guitars, vocals, keyboards, drum programming), Dunn (keyboards) and Morris Pleasure (bass, keyboards, trumpet, flugelhorn).  All three are former principal members of Earth, Wind & Fire, with Dunn being an original member.  Last year, Devoted Spirits debuted with the critically-acclaimed A Tribute To Earth, Wind & Fire (Thump Records Classic R&B/Experience Hendrix), a 21-song salute to their roots comprised of imaginative interpretations of the legendary R&B/pop group’s hit songbook along with one original composition (“Rhythm Of Love”).  Contributing to the album was a stellar cast including EWF founder and leader Maurice White, Norman Brown, Gerald Albright, Sounds of Blackness, original EWF guitarist Johnny Graham, Ronnie Laws, Bobby Watson (Rufus), and Teri Lynn Carrington.  The Answer is expected to contain mostly original songs.  Like the first album, expect the sophomore outing to be meticulously produced and passionately performed.

Devoted Spirits hope to soon announce concert dates that are expected to begin in February.  For additional information, please visit www.devotedspirits.com or www.myspace.com/devotedspirits.

Spirited salute to Earth, Wind & Fire hits record stores today

Devoted Spirits and impressive cast of guests earn praise for their
fresh and inventive performances of some of EWF’s biggest hits

Paying homage to their roots, three former principal members of Earth, Wind & Fire have united as Devoted Spirits to record A Tribute To Earth, Wind & Fire, a 21-song salute to the groundbreaking R&B-pop-funk band.  Released today by Thump Records Classic R&B in association with Experience Hendrix, LLC, the album features imaginative interpretations of the EWF hit songbook as performed by Sheldon Reynolds (guitar and vocals), Larry Dunn (keyboards) and Morris Pleasure (keyboards, bass and trumpet), each of whom had spent over a decade with EWF.  The set contains an original composition by Reynolds, “Rhythm Of Love,” an invigorating, cinematic love song that was serviced to smooth jazz radio stations.  Reynolds also produced the collection.

Devoted Spirits were joined in the studio by an impressive cast of musicians; most noteworthy was EWF founder and leader Maurice White, who gave his blessings on the project.  Other devoted musicians contributing to the album include Norman Brown, Gerald Albright, Sounds of Blackness, original EWF guitarist Johnny Graham, Ronnie Laws, Bobby Watson (Rufus), and Teri Lynn Carrington.  Like the originals, percussion plays a big part of the tracks as African and Latin rhythms dance amidst layers of soaring vocal harmonies.  Rock guitars shred some of the upbeat cuts, funk-up the mid-tempo tracks, and riff melodically on the ballads.  Hallmark horn sounds accentuate and vibrantly blast energy into some tracks or add cool class to the jazzy selections.

The early response from critics has been positive.  Urban Network wrote “This 21-track CD finds them touching on all of ‘the elements’ – soul, jazz, gospel, blues and rock – in covers of several of the band’s classics in sometimes inventive, ever-reverential ways.”  Soul-Patrol.com said “This album kept me smiling thru all 20-plus songs because it feels like someone decided to go back and redo EWF’s music as if it all retained ‘the high-minded jazz/soul/rock/Afro centric ideals’ of the original band…Devoted Spirits has taken great songs from the songbook of Black History and gave them the historical treatment that the songs deserve, but did so with a love and care that will insure that listeners will understand its true context.”

For Devoted Spirits, this album project is not an end.  Instead, it is a beginning as they hope to record an album of new material next.  Like EWF, playing the music live is a big part of the magic as well.  Devoted Spirits has already performed several shows and the response has been enthusiastic.  They are exploring the possibility of touring major U.S. cities this summer.

Devoted Spirits to debut March 22nd with a tribute CD to their roots

Three former EWF members helm a stellar salute to the band's legacy and catalogue of hits

Devoted Spirits, three former members of the legendary Earth, Wind & Fire, will release their debut album, A Tribute To Earth, Wind & Fire, on March 22nd on Thump Records in association with Experience Hendrix, LLC. The group is comprised of Sheldon Reynolds (guitars, vocals), Larry Dunn (keyboards), and Morris Pleasure (keyboards, bass and trumpet), who were principal players in the iconic band that seamlessly blended R&B, pop, jazz, rock and Gospel music. A heartfelt offering of affection and respect, the record features "Rhythm Of Love," a jubilantly inspired song about EWF written by Reynolds that will be released as the first single for the smooth jazz radio format. Reynolds produced the collection and Janie Hendrix executive produced.

Like the original hits, the songs on A Tribute To Earth, Wind & Fire were meticulously produced, thoughtfully arranged and passionately performed by accomplished musicians and vocalists. Dunn was one of the architects of the EWF sound and, as an original band member, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with EWF in 2000. Reynolds joined EWF in the late '80s and spent fourteen years touring and recording with the group. Pleasure was welcomed to the band over a decade ago and served as musical director. Sharing their passion on this tribute project were such gifted players as Norman Brown, Gerald Albright, Sounds of Blackness, Ronnie Laws, original EWF guitarist Johnny Graham, Bobby Watson (Rufus), and Teri Lynn Carrington. While Devoted Spirits came together with the purpose of offering gratitude to the band from which they emerged, they've cast an eye toward the future with the aim of releasing an album of new material.

"For Larry, making this album was a sweet homecoming of sorts, honoring the body of music he helped create. Morris and I have been both fans and members of EWF, so we've had the unusual opportunity of playing with our heroes and even contributing to their legacy," said Reynolds. "(EWF leader) Maurice (White) taught us all so much and it was his vision that we feel blessed to have been a part of."

Last weekend, Devoted Spirits made their live performance debut with two shows during the NAMM trade convention in Anaheim, CA. They are scheduled to perform in Seattle on February 12th at The Triple Door. Additional concert dates will be announced as the band hopes to tour major U.S. cities this spring.
