Moving people with his voice: Brandon Burrows releases debut album

14-year-old R&B-pop crooner recorded On The Move with prominent musicians

Despite being only 14 years-old, Brandon Burrows is already planning to follow a different path instead of going into the family business that is four generations-old.  Today’s release of his debut album, On The Move, the cover of which shows Burrows sitting atop a moving crate, is the first step towards what the R&B-pop singer hopes will be an enduring music career.  The album title and first single, “On The Move,” is a nod to the family’s moving and transport business.  Burrows, whose great-grandfather was one of the founders of the International Association of Movers, hopes that his Sketchin’ Records release will move people through music.

The generous seventeen-song collection, produced by Amber & Rob Whitlock, is comprised of compositions by iconic singer-songwriters Stevie Wonder, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, Cat Stevens, Bob Marley, Ray Charles, and Kenny Loggins along with a pair of originals, including one co-penned by Burrows (“Chase Your Dreams”).  Burrows helped select the songs for the album with his long-time vocal coach, Amber Whitlock.  He recently told the North County Times newspaper, “Amber and I whittled it down to some songs that fit well with the originals we had written and also my voice and how I could perform them.  We wanted to have different energy levels so it would make a good concert.”

Born in Guam and residing in San Diego since the age of four, Burrows recorded On The Move in New York City where a noted ensemble helped him realize his dream including keyboardist Rob Whitlock (The Jazz Crusaders), guitarist Chuck Loeb (Kirk Whalum, Metro), bassist Will Lee (David Letterman’s Late Show Band, Sting), bassist Anthony Jackson (Steely Dan, Madonna), bassist Alex Al (Herbie Hancock), drummer Cliff Almond (Michel Camilo), trombonist Andy Martin (Natalie Cole, Pussycat Dolls), trumpeter Wayne Bergeron (Christina Aguilara, Ray Charles) and saxophonist John Rekevics (Checkfield, Big Mountain) along with vocalists Amber Whitlock (Max Bennett), Jim Gilstrap (Stevie Wonder) and Dorian Holley (American Idol vocal coach).

To help launch the album, Burrows performed for a boisterous crowd at Dizzy’s in San Diego over the Memorial Day weekend.  Additional shows at local clubs are being scheduled for the coming summer months.

The title track has been garnering radio spins across the nation and reviewers are beginning to take note of the talented teenager who possesses the poise and passion of an old soul.  Below are some of the early highlights.

O’s Place Jazz: “We had to do a double-take after popping this CD into the player.  Brandon's voice is a lot more than we anticipated.  He's got depth, range and a lot of heart and soul…You will definitely hear more from Brandon, one of the best young talents we have heard in a long time!”

SmoothJazz.com: “…this talented singer debuts with ON THE MOVE, a sparkling collection of mostly classic pop hits.  This is timeless stuff, ranging from Jimi Hendrix (‘The Wind Cries Mary’ and ‘Fire’) to Stevie Wonder (‘Superwoman’) to Cyndi Lauper (‘True Colors’), all delivered with gusto and an authority that belies Brandon’s age.  Comparisons will be made to early Michael Jackson (Brandon’s cover of the Jackson Five’s ‘I Want You Back’ will definitely take you back and aback.), so get aboard the early fan-base.  Believe me, this kid has talent to spare!”

N2Entertainment.com: “Brandon Burrows latest CD is appropriately titled ‘On The Move’ because this 14-year-old soulful crooner is definitely going places.  It takes major confidence to tackle some of the biggest pop, gospel and R&B songs…But Burrows gets the job done in fine fashion…‘On The Move’ is an impressive debut and now sets the stage for what should be more great music from this rising star.”

Brandon Burrows is On The Move chasing his dreams

Soulful teenage crooner is backed by an accomplished cast on the debut album that will be released May 26th, title track headed to radio

Sweaty funk workouts, inspiring ballads, buoyant pop confections and the songbook of legends make up the debut album from 14-year-old crooner Brandon Burrows.  Produced by Amber & Rob Whitlock, On The Move will be released May 26th on Sketchin’ Records.  Possessing a soulful, heavenly voice along with the maturity of an old soul, Burrows co-wrote “Chase Your Dreams” for the seventeen-track collection featuring unique interpretations of songs penned by iconic singer-songwriters Stevie Wonder, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, Cat Stevens, Bob Marley, Ray Charles, and Kenny Loggins.  An original composition, the album’s title track was serviced to radio and will go for playlist adds March 23.  “On The Move” is an aggressive deep-pocketed, horn-blasted groove that goes for it straight out of the gate while Burrows exercises the full-range of his vocal muscle.

Initially Burrows teamed with Amber Whitlock for vocal lessons a couple years ago.  Impressed with his talent and passion, she began grooming him for a career in music.  Last year, Amber brought in her husband, Rob Whitlock, to produce On The Move.  Although all three are based in San Diego, the recording sessions took place in gritty New York City where some of the finest session musicians in town lent their edge to sharpen the project.  Players recruited included keyboardist Rob Whitlock (The Jazz Crusaders), bassist Anthony Jackson (Steely Dan, Madonna), bassist Will Lee (David Letterman’s Late Show Band, Sting), guitarist Chuck Loeb (Kirk Whalum, Metro), bassist Alex Al (Herbie Hancock), drummer Cliff Almond (Michel Camilo), trombonist Andy Martin (Natalie Cole, Pussycat Dolls), trumpeter Wayne Bergeron (Christina Aguilara, Ray Charles) and saxophonist John Rekevics (Checkfield, Big Mountain) along with vocalists Amber Whitlock (Max Bennett), Jim Gilstrap (Stevie Wonder) and Dorian Holley (American Idol vocal coach), some of whom Burrows has performed with at San Diego-area clubs.

Citing singers such as Wonder, Charles, Michael Jackson, and Michael Buble as influences, it was natural for Burrows to record songs for On The Move made famous by Wonder (“Do I Love Her,” “Sugar” and “Superwoman”), The Jackson 5 (“I Want You Back” and “Got To Be There”), Charles (“Hallelujah”), Hendrix (“The Wind Cries Mary” and “Fire”), Lennon & McCartney (“We Can Work It Out”), Marley (“Redemption Song”), Loggins (“Celebrate Me Home”) and a Lennon solo composition (“Hold On”).  Additional tracks already flagged for radio spins include a sweltering version of Stevens’ “Wild World,” a gorgeous duet with Amber Whitlock on “True Colors,” which was originally recorded by Cyndi Lauper, and “Chase Your Dreams,” a motivational anthem Burrows wrote with The Whitlock’s.

"I'm fortunate to have a hand in my own musical development, which is something most young musicians can't say,” said the self-assured yet somewhat reserved Burrows, who included several of his sketches and paintings in the CD artwork.  “I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn from the seasoned musicians that surrounded me throughout the recording process, which helped me mature both as a singer and songwriter as well as allowed me to explore vast musical horizons.   It’s been a fun and exciting experience realizing the dream of making a record.  Hopefully this is just the first of many albums.”

Born in Guam, Burrows lived in Hawaii until age 4 when the family moved to California.  His gift for singing was discovered early and led to spending a couple summers at Rock Star camp where he delivered award-winning performances and recordings.  He’s sung the National Anthem at sold-out San Diego Padres and San Diego Surf Dawgs games.   Burrows is active in the planning of his concerts and the development of his fan base.  He’s looking forward to performing music from On The Move at an album release event at Dizzy’s in San Diego over Memorial Day weekend days prior to the record’s street date.  Additional information is available at www.brandonburrows.com and www.sketchinrecords.com.
