Modern Times call for modern measures

for guitarist Marc Antoine

Single receives the remix treatment while the artist works the road extensively

With today’s release of the Modern Times album, guitarist Marc Antoine is prepared to take modern jazz to the next level.  “There comes a time in the life of an artist when you feel in a certain space and you just have to do it.  No thinking, just do it.  This is that time for me,” said the Rendezvous Entertainment recording artist about his seventh solo album, which he produced with dance music producer-club DJ David Ferraro in his home studio in Madrid, Spain.  Although Antoine has created a distinctive musical identity that has earned him four number one singles, he’s boldly taking his music in progressive new directions on this new collection.

If the advancement of an art form is based upon abolishing creative boundaries and blending the best elements of technology, culture, and philosophy, Modern Times will be viewed as a defining recording in the evolution of contemporary jazz.  Clubby dance grooves, funky hip hop beats, and pulsating electronic rhythms envelop or enhance the jazz, classical and blues influenced tracks.  Antoine collaborated with the writing of nine new compositions in addition to covering the samba romancer, “La Belle Dame Sans Regrets,” originally recorded by Sting and the first vocal number by Antoine, who croons sensually in French.  The Paris-born Antoine seasons his recordings with the cultures he encounters in his world travels.  Latin and African percussion, flamenco guitar riffs, European nuances, and devotional Indian chants lend color, texture, spirit and sophistication to the tracks.  Antoine has fluently expanded his dialect on the album.  Known for his flamenco acoustic guitar bravura, Antoine often communicates through a cool-toned electric jazz guitar.

The festive first single, “Bella Via,” energetically powered by shuffling Latin percussion and Antoine’s emotive acoustic guitar, was recently serviced to smooth jazz radio stations.  The track has just been remixed by Dave Rideau, a three-time Grammy nominee who is known for his work on recordings by Janet Jackson, Usher, Jennifer Lopez, Sting, Mary J. Blige, Kirk Franklin, and TLC.  It will soon be shipped to radio stations as well as to club DJs.

Since mid-June, Antoine has constantly been on the road to lay the foundation for this different and pivotal album release.  He’s toured the concert trail in major U.S. cities with sax star Dave Koz, R&B vocalist Jeffrey Osborne and cutting-edge saxophonist Praful as part of the “Dave Koz & Friends” summer trek, which concludes this Sunday night (August 21) at the Hollywood Bowl in Hollywood, California.  Between tour dates, Antoine has made extensive visits to key commercial and non-commercial radio stations and retail outlets in other major markets.  At album listening events, Antoine has played acoustic solo mini-concerts that have left the audiences enraptured.  The efforts are already paying off as Modern Times went #1 on Amazon’s “Top Sellers” jazz list.

Antoine’s four number one singles are “Sunland,” “Mas Que Nada,” “Mediterraneo” and “Funky Picante.”  He has deployed his guitar finesse to recordings and concert performances by some of the most distinguished and diverse artists in music, including Sting, Cher, Queen Latifah, George Benson, Basia, Soul II Soul, Selena, Guru’s Jazzmatazz, Will Downing, Richard Elliot, Rick Braun, Peter White and David Benoit.  Koz is co-founder of Rendezvous Entertainment, for which Antoine records.

Modern Times reflect big changes for guitarist Marc Antoine

New album due August 16, major summer tour with Dave Koz & Friends

Modern times call for modern measures.  After creating a distinctive classical, Latin jazz, flamenco sound that has repeatedly lead him to the top of the charts, guitarist Marc Antoine adventurously stretches his creative muse in new directions on Modern Times, his seventh solo album, scheduled for release on August 16th from the Rendezvous Entertainment record label.  The festive “Bella Via,” on which Antoine drives his signature acoustic guitar along a shuffling Latin percussion groove, will be the first cut going for adds at contemporary jazz radio on July 11th.

It’s rare for a successful artist in peak form to audaciously step outside of the proven to push the creative envelope, reinventing himself as a new musical persona, but that’s exactly what Antoine is doing with panache.  Recording the album in his studio in Madrid, Spain, Antoine produced Modern Times with European dance music producer-club DJ David Ferrero and collaborated on nine new compositions.  The album reflects a confident step into foreign terrain for Antoine.  Known for his acoustic guitar bravura, he plays electric guitar on several cuts and even croons a cool lead vocal on the romantic samba cover, “La Belle Dame Sans Regrets,” a song originally recorded by Sting.  The Paris-born musician has affection for incorporating his world travels and various cultures into his music.  Antoine continues his affair with Spanish, Latin and European rhythms and riffs, but he expands his itinerary on the new record to include musical excursions into South Africa (“Umbele”) and India (“Cantar al Amor”), the latter of which features sacred chanting.  Throughout the album, the production boasts plenty of vocal samples, sometimes dreamy or sometimes haunting female backing vocals, and hip club beats and grooves that set an array of vibes upon which Antoine’s moody and melodic guitar meanders.

“Years ago, I read a quote from Miles Davis about when he ventured into entirely new creative directions.  He said that he found someone from outside of his (jazz) world to collaborate with.  That’s exactly what I did on Modern Times.  David (Ferrero) is very well known in the club world and he brought an entirely fresh sensibility to my music,” explained Antoine.  “Although people primarily know me for my acoustic flamenco guitar sound, for years I’ve also done sessions on electric (guitar) for Celine Dion, Queen Latifah and others.  I wanted to explore a different musical palate by using an electric guitar on some tracks.  I think some might be caught off guard by this album, but I’m pleased with the way it came out and I hope people will listen to it with an open mind.”

To support Modern Times, Antoine will spend the summer on a major U.S. concert tour with sax star Dave Koz, R&B vocalist Jeffrey Osborne and Praful, a cutting-edge sax player who incorporates ambient vibes and electronic dance beats to his music.  Koz is co-founder of Rendezvous Entertainment, for which Antoine records.

To date, Antoine has scored four number one singles – “Sunland,” “Mas Que Nada,” “Mediterraneo” and “Funky Picante.”  He has deployed his guitar finesse to recordings and concert performances by some of the most distinguished and diverse artists in music, including Sting, Cher, George Benson, Basia, Soul II Soul, Selena, Guru’s Jazzmatazz, Will Downing, David Benoit, Rick Braun, Peter White and Richard Elliot.

WIN A TRIP TO SEE GUITARIST MARC ANTOINE PERFORM IN HOLLYWOOD

In what may be the coolest Christmas gift this year, the Rendezvous Entertainment record label is holding a contest to see Latin-jazz guitarist Marc Antoine perform at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California on December 21st, 2003. One winner will receive two concert tickets, two roundtrip airplane tickets to Los Angeles from anywhere in the continental United States, two nights at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel, $100 towards a rental car, and a new set of eBags luggage. To enter the random drawing, complete the entry form at www.rendezvousmusic.com.

Antoine is presently touring in support of the Mediterraneo album, his first for the Rendezvous Entertainment label co-founded by sax sensation Dave Koz. The guitarist is co-headlining "A Smooth Jazz Christmas," a solidly-booked concert trek comprised of 21 concerts in 19 cities in 24 days that will conclude with the Hollywood concert date at the "home of the Oscars." Koz, Chris Botti, Brian Culbertson and Bobby Caldwell share the stage with Antoine on the tour, which features the stellar cast performing holiday chestnuts, music from new albums and greatest hits. Some of the smooth jazz radio stations along the tour route also have posted links to enter the contest via their website.

The new world music-influenced CD from Antoine, Mediterraneo, is romancing radio listeners, record buyers, concert goers and music critics from coast to coast. The album entered the Top 10 on Billboard's contemporary jazz albums chart; "Funky Picante," the first single from the Paris-born, Madrid-based artist's new disc, reached the Top 20 on Radio & Records' smooth jazz radio chart.

In addition to releasing Antoine's latest CD, Rendezvous Entertainment has previously released last year's Grammy nominated Golden Slumbers collection, which features lullabies from an ensemble of luminaries including Koz, Culbertson, Peter White, Rick Braun, and David Benoit. Earlier this year, the label released the U.S. debut from Dutch saxophonist Praful, who may be the breakout artist of the year at smooth jazz radio in addition to creating a buzz on dance floors with the innovative sounds featured on One Day Deep.

GUITARIST MARC ANTOINE'S MEDITERRANEO SEDUCES RADIO, THE ALBUM CHARTS, FANS & CRITICS ALIKE

Up next is a 21-date holiday concert tour throughout the U.S.

The new world music-influenced CD from Latin-jazz guitarist Marc Antoine, Mediterraneo, is romancing radio listeners, record buyers, concert goers and music critics from coast to coast. "Funky Picante," the first single from the Paris-born, Madrid-based artist's new collection, is spicing up the Top 20 on Radio & Records' smooth jazz radio chart, while the album crashed the shores of Billboard's Top 10 Contemporary Jazz Album Chart.

Antoine recently wrapped a six-week U.S. concert tour along with Dave Koz, Chris Botti and Jeff Lorber. Saxman Koz happens to be the co-founder of Rendezvous Entertainment, the record label that released Antoine's album this fall. Beginning the day after Thanksgiving, Antoine and Koz team with Botti, Brian Culbertson and Bobby Caldwell for "A Smooth Jazz Christmas," a solidly-booked concert trek comprised of 21 concerts in 19 cities in 24 days before Christmas. The stellar group of musicians will be performing holiday standards along with tracks from their current CDs and recent hits.

We can spend time hurling a bunch of colorful adjectives at you that aptly describe the Mediterraneo album, but you're much better at that than we are so we'll let you do it for us:

"He's an amazingly gifted guitarist who plays in flamenco and Latin jazz styles with equal grade and aplomb, and his recordings are slick, sweet and lean heavily on the smooth jazz tip. That said, on Mediterraneo, his seventh album, there is some real fire in both material and playing…Ultimately, Mediterraneo is Antoine's finest moment to date, and is indicative of the kinds of changes he's moving toward as his grasp of his chosen music vocabularies grows and expands on that knowledge." - All Music Guide

"…Marc Antoine commands your attention with a world beat in a sea of jazzy currents. The songs on the album are distinctly spicy. You can almost taste the flavors of a quaint café in Madrid or imagine yourself on a distant shore…Flamenco guitar, samplings of hip-hop, cool grooves and classical remembrances all combine into an intimate jazz excursion that will ignite your senses." - JazzReview.com

"Flamenco-jazz guitarist Marc Antoine gives smooth jazz a good name. Mediterraneo shows that Antoine's acoustic guitar chops have enough bite to steer his music beyond the blandness of so much smooth jazz. His phrasing is confident and laid back - he doesn't need to fill every moment with notes. And his playing is infused with a subtle romanticism and hints of the exotic." - Newark Star-Ledger

"Marc's last album, Cruisin', was fabulous, and he's taking it up a notch here. Antoine penned ten of the eleven tracks…Mixing styles and influences, you'd think that Antoine was a world music artist, but the contemporary jazz radio format has championed him and made him a future smooth jazz legend." - JazzUSA.com

"Mediterraneo certainly deserves a wide hearing. Released, Sept. 23, the album's 11 tracks feature eight Antoine originals, including the accurately titled 'Funky Picante,' and the closing ode to his son, 'Alejandro's Lullaby.' The sound throughout is lively, a blend of funk rhythms and flamenco guitar, Latin percussion and lovely ballads." - Stockton Record

INDULGE IN THE PASSION & ROMANCE OF THE "MEDITERRANEO" ON SEPTEMBER 23RD

Guitarist Marc Antoine's new album will be supported by extensive concert dates

As refreshing as plunging into the ocean on a sweltering summer day, the new album by guitarist Marc Antoine is scheduled for release from sax star Dave Koz's Rendezvous Entertainment record label on September 23rd. The first track serviced to radio, "Funky Picante," sets the stage for the album release and is typical of the expanse of music that the Paris-born, Madrid-based artist explores. It's a collection that is "world music" by every definition of the term.

Beautiful and infectious classical acoustic guitar melodies, rhythmic flamenco riffs, lively Latin percussion nuances, shuffling funk/hip-hop grooves and soothing contemporary jazz jaunts are neatly presented in seductive soulful sonicscapes. Antoine produced and arranged the tracks on his sixth album, which were mixed by Mike Pela, who is known for the vibe he's contributed to recordings by Sade and Maxwell. The album was recorded in Antoine's studio in Madrid by multiple Grammy Award winner Rafa Sardina, who has produced and/or engineered recordings by artists such as Angie Stone, Macy Gray, Dru Hill, and Luis Miguel. Of the eleven cuts on the disc, Antoine wrote eight, collaborated on two, and delivered a classy cover of Everything But The Girl's "Lady."

As a solo artist, Antoine has topped the charts twice ("Sunland" and "Mas Que Nada") while becoming a signature artist at smooth jazz radio. Antoine has lent his distinctive guitar elegance to recordings and concert performances by some of the most distinguished and diverse artists including Sting, Celine Dion, Basia, Queen Latifah, Cher, George Benson, Soul II Soul, Selena, Guru's Jazzmatazz, Will Downing, Dave Koz, David Benoit, Rick Braun, Peter White and Richard Elliot.

"I've had the pleasure of having Marc play on a couple of my records," said Koz. "We're all very excited about launching our record label with an artist of his magnitude. Marc is a uniquely talented musician that has a proven track record and the ability to appeal to a wide array of audiences."

On September 28th, Antoine will begin a U.S. concert tour with Koz, Jeff Lorber and Chris Botti, which continues through the first week of November. After Thanksgiving, Antoine will embark on another trek with Koz and Botti, this time accompanied by Brian Culbertson and Bobby Caldwell.
